Business card heaven

Well it seems you need a business card to get anywhere here - and I don't have one.  The Oxford alumni drinks party was an eye-opener.  As soon as you are introduced to anyone they whip out their card and proffer it.  I have so many cards I don't really know what to do with them all.  And absolutely everyone wants to be of assistance to me.  They all offered to help me find a job, told me who to phone up and ask out to lunch, advised me not to go to headhunters but do everything via contacts.  All very well but I don't have all that many contacts and worst of all - I don't have a business card. What on earth would I put on one anyway?

Is this really the way the job market works in the USA?  I wish I knew!
